Build a Daily News Briefing Bot with OpenClaw
Imagine waking up to a concise summary of everything that matters to you — tech news, industry updates, weather, your calendar — delivered to Telegram before you finish breakfast.
Here’s how to build one with your PolymathClaw agent in about five minutes.
What we’re building
A daily briefing bot that:
- Runs every morning at a time you choose
- Checks multiple news sources
- Filters for topics you care about
- Compiles a short, readable summary
- Sends it to your preferred channel (Telegram, Discord, Slack, or web chat)
No code. No workflow builder. Just a conversation with your agent.
Step 1: Get your agent running
If you don’t have a PolymathClaw instance yet:
- Sign up (30 free messages, no API key needed)
- Add an API key from any provider (Anthropic, OpenAI, or Google are popular choices)
- Click Deploy
Your agent is live in under two minutes.
Step 2: Connect a messaging channel
The briefing works best when it’s delivered to an app you already check. Go to your dashboard’s Channels tab:
- Telegram: Create a bot via @BotFather, paste the token
- Discord: Create a bot in the Discord Developer Portal, add it to your server
- Slack: Set up via the Control UI’s Channels tab
Or just use the built-in web chat if you prefer.
Step 3: Tell your agent what you want
Open a chat with your agent and describe your ideal briefing. Be specific about:
- What sources to check
- What topics matter to you
- When to send it
- How long the summary should be
Here’s an example prompt:
“Set up a daily briefing. Every weekday at 7:30am, do the following:
- Check the top 10 stories on Hacker News. Pick the 5 most interesting ones about AI, programming, or startups.
- Search Google News for ‘artificial intelligence’ and summarize the top 3 articles.
- Check the weather for Denver, Colorado.
- Give me a brief summary of each item — no more than 2 sentences per story. Format it nicely with headers.”
Your agent creates the cron job and confirms.
Step 4: Refine it
After a few days, you’ll know what works and what doesn’t. Adjust by chatting:
- “Add a section about cryptocurrency news”
- “Skip the weather, I have another app for that”
- “Make the summaries shorter — one sentence each”
- “Change the time to 8am”
- “Also run it on weekends but only the news, not the weather”
Example briefing output
Here’s what a typical morning briefing looks like:
Your Daily Briefing — March 15, 2026
Tech News
- Show HN: AI agent that manages your entire home lab — Developer built an AI agent that monitors Docker containers, updates services, and alerts on failures. 342 points.
- Google announces Gemini 2.5 with native tool use — New model supports direct API calls without function-calling wrappers. Available in AI Studio today.
- The hidden cost of AI code assistants — Analysis of 50 teams found AI-assisted code had 23% more bugs in the first month, but 40% fewer after teams learned to review AI output effectively.
AI Industry
- EU’s AI Act enforcement begins next month. Companies have 30 days to comply with transparency requirements for high-risk AI systems.
- Anthropic raises $3B Series E at $60B valuation, plans to expand enterprise features.
Weather — Denver, CO
Partly cloudy, high 62F. No umbrella needed.
Tips for better briefings
Pick the right model. Briefings involve web browsing and summarization. Claude Sonnet or GPT-4o work well and aren’t too expensive for daily use. Budget models like Gemini Flash work too if you want to minimize API costs.
Don’t go overboard with sources. Start with 2-3 sources. You can always add more. Too many sources make the briefing long and expensive.
Use the agent’s memory. Over time, your agent learns what you find interesting. It’ll naturally get better at picking relevant stories.
Combine with other data. If you have Todoist or Google Calendar connected, add “Include my tasks for today” or “List my meetings” to the briefing.
Your morning briefing runs every day, automatically, without you doing anything. That’s the point of an AI agent — it works for you even when you’re not talking to it.
